NEWFOUNDLAND
While Newfoundland discovers new wealth in oil and mineral extraction, the fishing dependent outports on her south coast continue to adjust to life after the cod moratorium of the early 1990s. For centuries the fishery sustained a way of life that came to define Canada's most Eastern province. Today, with few alternatives many are being forced to seek work out-of-province, a trend reflected in census statistics. As Newfoundlanders leave home and family behind in search of opportunity, the outport communities and the culture that surrounds them quickly erodes.
